The invisible bonds that unite all human beings take discernible shape in certain photographs. They may be the cable-strong ties of family, such as those apparent in Ken Heyman's picture opposite of an Israeli mother nursing a new baby while her son and husband watch with a mixture of love and awe. They may be no stronger than a young black arm thrown in good natured friendship over an even younger white shoulder (right). Or they may be the narcissistic bonds of adolescence, when concern for self becomes inextricably mixed with the need for others, as in Bruce Davidson's picture below of a boy and girl after a day at a public beach, together but apart.
